Basketball: Webster's Timeline History, 1728 - 1998 Reviews

Product Overview

Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Basketball," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Basketball in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Basketball when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Basketball, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain.

Historical Dictionary of Basketball (Historical Dictionaries of Sports) Reviews

Product Overview

In less than 120 years an activity invented by one man to alleviate winter boredom for a college gym class has evolved into a worldwide multi-billion dollar enterprise. It is impossible for Dr. James Naismith, basketball's inventor, to have envisioned the extent to which his simple game would reach. Without major changes to his original 13 rules, basketball is now played in more than 200 countries by people of all ages. Thanks to basketball, players like Michael Jordan, Earvin "Magic" Johnson, Larry Bird, LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, and Shaquille O'Neal have become some of the most famous people in the world.

The Historical Dictionary of Basketball is a comprehensive account of all forms of basketball—amateur, professional, men's, women's, Olympic, domestic, and international—from its invention in 1891 through the present day. This is done through a chronology, an introductory essay, an extensive bibliography, and over 600 cross-referenced dictionary entries on the people, places, teams, and terminology of the game.

Metro Detroit's High School Basketball Rivalries (Images of Sports) Reviews

Product Overview

Few cities can claim a hardwood heritage like that found in metro Detroit. Metro Detroit has been the epicenter for cataclysmic change in the past 60 years that no other major American city has suffered, but the one constant among so much upheaval is a passionate following afforded high school basketball. The rise and fall of the automotive industry, the Motown record label's emergence and eventual relocation, social and racial unrest, and the polarization of one of America's great cities has not slowed the love and passion Detroiters-city and suburban dwellers alike-share for prep basketball.

Product Overview

Once upon a time, twenty-four grown men would play baseball together, eat together, carouse together, and brawl together. Alas, those hard-partying warriors have been replaced by GameBoy-obsessed, laptop-carrying, corporate soldiers who would rather punch a clock than a drinking buddy. But it wasn't always this way ...

In The Bad Guys Won, award-winning former Sports Illustrated baseball writer Jeff Pearlman returns to an innocent time when a city worshipped a man named Mookie and the Yankess were the second-best team in New York. So it was in 1986, when the New York Mets -- the last of baseball's live-like-rock-star teams -- won the World Series and captured the hearts (and other select body parts) of fans everywhere.

But their greatness on the field was nearly eclipsed by how bad they were off it. Led by the indomitable Keith Hernandez and the young dynamic duo of Dwight Gooden and Darryl Strawberry, along with the gallant Scum Bunch, the Amazin's won 108 regular-season games, while leaving a wide trail of wreckage in their wake -- hotel rooms, charter planes, a bar in Houston, and most famously Bill Buckner and the eternally cursed Boston Red Sox. With an unforgettable cast of characters -- Doc, Straw, the Kid, Nails, Mex, and manager Davey Johnson (as well as innumerable groupies) -- The Bad Guys Won immortalizes baseball's last great wild bunch of explores what could have been, what should have been, and thanks to a tragic dismantling of the club, what never was.

To the Hoop: The Seasons of a Basketball Life Reviews

Product Overview

Ira Berkow steps out from behind his New York Times reporter's notebook to spin the tales of his life as a pickup basketball player—running the court with Oscar Robertson, talking strategy with Walt Frazier, and finding fellowship and good humor across the country on playgrounds, in gyms, even in some of the world's famous arenas. Mr. Berkow shares his enduring passion for the hardwood, which began in his boyhood in Chicago in the 1940s and '50s and has continued with the same vigor and competitive fire of his youth, often against opponents half his age. To the Hoop tells the story of a year in his basketball life, as he resolves to enhance his game and stave off the ravages of time. It's a wonderful and moving tale of love—for the game, for his friends and family, and for life itself.

"An extraordinary look into the art of pickup basketball. Who would have guessed that, along with his writing talents, Ira knows how to play the game!"—Bill Bradley

"A wonderful book—not just for basketball fans but for everyone."—Earvin "Magic" Johnson

"Ira Berkow is one of the best sportswriters around, so it is no surprise that his basketball odyssey is one of the best sports books of this or any other year."—George Plimpton

White Sox Encyclopedia Reviews

Product Overview

Much of the White Sox history is underscored by its sometimes grim tug-of-war with the Cubs for the loyalties of Chicago fans. Even though the Sox earned bragging rights by soundly thrashing their cross-town rivals in a celebrated World Series, the annual post-season City Series, and any number of charity games that followed, the White Sox emerged as the classic underdog following the epochal Black Sox Scandal of 1920. The conspiracy to throw the 1919 World Series was a defining moment in baseball and for the fortunes of the beloved Chicago institution in the coming decades."The White Sox Encyclopedia" is a comprehensive history of one of the most controversial teams in the American league: the trials, tribulations and moments of glory of a ballclub interwoven into the fabric of the South Side Irish community that supported it through years of crowning glory, the disgrace of the devastating scandal, and the long, losing seasons that were to follow. This book brings together, for the first time, 10 decades of baseball on the South Side and will be a wealth of information for White Sox fans, sports mavens, and trivia buffs alike. It includes: 700 illustrations, including a 16-page color section; complete statistics through the 1996 season on hitting streaks and ERA's, box scores, trades; an all-time roster of managers, players and position leaders; season-by-season descriptions; game highlights; over 100 player profiles from Tommie Agee to Richie Zisk; all the great stars past and present; the managerial strategies, the personalities, honors; and, the milestones descriptions of unforgettable moments and memories. Richard C. Lindberg is the official White Sox historian and Managing Editor of the "Illinois Police & Sheriff's News". He is author of "Stealing First in a Two-Team Town", "Who's on Third", "Quotable Chicago", and "Chicago Ragtime" and has written for "Chicago Tribune" magazine, "Inside Chicago" magazine, and "Chicago History" magazine.

The NBA From Top to Bottom: A History of the NBA, From the No. 1 Team Through No. 1,153 Reviews

Product Overview

What NBA team was the greatest ever? For basketball fans, that question can lead to widespread debate.

Sports journalist and basketball enthusiast Kyle Wright has created a new and unique computer formula to rank every team in NBA history. Coining it as the POST formula, Wright assigns ratings to all NBA teams based on how they stack up to other comparable teams during any year—from the number of wins and losses to points scored and points allowed. The result is a complete ranking that takes you from number one to number 1,153.

Wright brings to light other game-stopping details that sports lovers will appreciate, including:

  • The most dominant teams to ever play
  • The teams with brilliant records but no titles
  • The unimpressive teams that won championships
  • The teams that lost the most through the years

The NBA from Top to Bottom is for every diehard basketball fan. It achieves nothing but net as it comprehensively identifies and profiles the best and worst teams ever to grace the court.

Loose Balls: The Short, Wild Life of the American Basketball Association For Sale

Loose Balls: The Short, Wild Life of the American Basketball Association | | Reviews

Product Overview

What do Julius Erving, Larry Brown, Moses Malone, Bob Costas, the Indiana Pacers, the San Antonio Spurs and the Slam Dunk Contest have in common? They all got their professional starts in the American Basketball Association.

The NBA may have won the financial battle, but the ABA won the artistic war. With its stress on wide-open individual play, the adoption of the 3-point shot and pressing defense, and the encouragement of flashy moves and flying dunks, today's NBA is still -- decades later -- just the ABA without the red, white and blue ball.

Loose Balls is, after all these years, the definitive and most widely respected history of the ABA. It's a wild ride through some of the wackiest, funniest, strangest times ever to hit pro sports -- told entirely through the (often incredible) words of those who played, wrote and connived their way through the league's nine seasons.

Sandy Koufax: A Lefty's Legacy (P.S.) For Sale

Sandy Koufax: A Lefty's Legacy (P.S.) | | Reviews

Product Overview

No immortal in the history of baseball retired so young, so well, or so completely as Sandy Koufax. After compiling a remarkable record from 1962 to 1966 that saw him lead the National League in ERA all five years, win three Cy Young awards, and pitch four no-hitters including a perfect game, Koufax essentially disappeared. Save for his induction into the Hall of Fame and occasional appearances at the Dodgers training camp, Koufax has remained unavailable, unassailable, and unsullied, in the process becoming much more than just the best pitcher of his generation. He is the Jewish boy from Brooklyn, who refused to pitch the opening game of the 1965 World Series on Yom Kippur, defining himself as a man who placed faith over fame. This act made him the standard to which Jewish parents still hold their children. Except for his autobiography (published in 1966), Koufax has resolutely avoided talking about himself. But through sheer doggedness that even Koufax came to marvel at, Jane Leavy was able to gain his trust to the point where they talked regularly over the three years Leavy reported her book. With Koufax′s blessing, Leavy interviewed nearly every one of his former teammates, opponents, and friends, and emerged with a portrait of the artist that is as thorough and stylish as was his command on the pitching mound.

The Eternal Summer: Palmer, Nicklaus, and Hogan in 1960, Golf's Golden Year For Sale

The Eternal Summer: Palmer, Nicklaus, and Hogan in 1960, Golf's Golden Year | | Reviews

Product Overview

Was there ever a year in golf like 1960?
It was the year that the sport and its vivid personalities exploded on the consciousness of the nation, when the past, present, and future of the sport collided. Here was Arnold Palmer, the workingman's hero, "sweating, chain-smoking, shirt-tail flying"; Ben Hogan, the greatest player of the fifties, a perfectionist battling twin demons of age and nerves; and, making his big-time debut, a crew-cut college kid who seemed to have the makings of a champion: twenty-year-old Jack Nicklaus.
And of course, the rest: Ken Venturi, Chi Chi Rodriguez, Doug Sanders, Gary Player, and the many other colorful characters who chased around a little white ball--and a dream.
Would Palmer win the mythical Grand Slam of golf? Could Hogan win one more major tournament? Was Nicklaus the real thing? Even more than an intimate portrait of these men and their exciting times, The Eternal Summer is also an entertaining, perceptive, and hypnotically readable exploration of professional golf in America.

More Than a Game For Sale

More Than a Game | | Reviews

Product Overview

More than a Game is the odyssey of Jackson's journey—from New York Knick and world champion, to CBA coach, to six-time Chicago Bulls world champion, to this year's L.A. Lakers world champion—and the lessons in leadership he learned each step of the way. It is the tale of Rosen's journey as well, carrying the torch for the game of basketball through careers as star college player, CBA coach, and preeminent novelist of the game. It is also the story of the system jackson coaches, the powertriangle, as put forth by Lakers assistant coach Tex Winter. The triangle can be understood as a philosophy of basketball and life—one that values role players almost as much as star players, and where fundamentals rule.
